Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for several hours when numerous of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights affecting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that such operations become economically unsustainable and present no risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
