Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a coordinated attack targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The location, identified by surveillance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was situated in mountainous terrain just north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets employed Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a several access tunnels down to the site... early reports indicate the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the strike late on Saturday and each participating jet made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed extremist governance over large swathes of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action demonstrates the UK's leading role, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to stamp out any revival of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

British military aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of IS subsequent to its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of our armed forces who took part in this strike for their skill and their bravery," the Defence Secretary added. "They were among a great many UK service members on duty over the festive period. This action, to remove terrorist threats who pose a risk to our security, highlights how British military are always on standby, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and strong abroad."

During December, the US military executed what it called a "massive strike" against IS targets in Syria, after an ambush killed two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations estimates Daesh still has between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in both countries.
